Monday Morning Motivation!

“Every artist was first an amateur.”
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

While this quote is somewhat motivating, do you feel like you aren’t far enough along than you should be whether in life or in art? Do you consider yourself an amateur, professional, and/or an artist? Can you only be a professional to be an artist?

An amateur is defined as:

1. One who engages in an art, science, study, or athletic activity as a pastime rather than as a profession.
2. One lacking the skill of a professional, as in an art.

from thefreedictionary.com

A professional is defined as:
1. A person following a profession, especially a learned profession.
2. One who earns a living in a given or implied occupation: hired a professional to decorate the house.
3. A skilled practitioner; an expert.

An artist is defined as:

1. One, such as a painter, sculptor, or writer, who is able by virtue of imagination and talent or skill to create works of aesthetic value, especially in the fine arts.
2. A person whose work shows exceptional creative ability or skill: You are an artist in the kitchen.
3. One, such as an actor or singer, who works in the performing arts.
So, how does one go from an amateur to an artist like the quote above by Ralph Waldo Emerson? Do you agree with him? Is a professional an artist? Why isn’t an amateur considered an artist? I think that almost anyone can be an artist if they truly have their heart in it! We are all beginners at some point and can become professional if we really work hard. But, sometimes professionals aren’t really artists if they lose their creative ability and become uninspired. What do you think?
